I am excited to work with like minded educators to inspire real change on issues that make some people nervous to discuss.

I am excited to be part of TAG because I believe that Oakland is the best city to teach in and I want to be part of a group that helps to bring and keep talented teachers in Oakland.

I am inspired by the countless extra hours that teachers, students and their families invest in advocating for Oakland schools. The community is demanding that students are raised to question, innovate and speak truth to power and we all play a part in that work.

Why are you excited to be a part of the Teacher Advisory Group working to make Oakland a better place for educators?
I am excited to be a part of the teacher advisory group because I know that when teachers are empowered to do their best work, the children in our community thrive. Teacher retention is an equity issue and solving this problem in Oakland has a direct impact on our children’s future.

I’m inspired by students and their families who left their homelands to come to the U.S., largely because of the promise of education and the opportunities it affords.

I read somewhere once, “If you don’t feed the teachers, they will eat the children.” I want help teachers be fed with support, feedback, instructional tools, and success.

What inspires you?
Like all teachers, I teach for my students. I teach because I want my students to know how they can make change – whether the world is ready or not! I teach because I never want to stop learning.

Oakland’s educators are the foundation of Oakland’s schools. I am proud to work with public school educators from across the city to help make Oakland the best place to teach in the Bay.

The collective voices of our hard-working parents and families who often have the solutions to some of our most systemic complex problems in education.

I wake up every day with a sense of purpose to ensure the voices and experiences of the families and students I serve are at the forefront of the work that I do in and out of REACH Academy. I’m excited to be a part of the TAG because I’ve made a commitment to the families and students in East Oakland in ensuring we recruit and retain the best teaching talent to work alongside them in the struggle towards a more equitable and just education.

I’m excited to work alongside other teachers to provide perspectives and craft solutions to problems that impact our work. As practitioners, our voices are critical to any conversation around how to improve education.

What inspires you?
The children I work with inspire me. They are a happy bunch of special education, English Language learners, first generation students and survivors; the commonality being low income. The make my day, everyday.

Why are you excited to be a part of the Teacher Advisory Group working to make Oakland a better place for educators?
I am excited to be a part of the TAG because it’s an avenue where I can have a voice for teachers in the Early Childhood Department, a group that is often left out. In addition the fact that I am in a position to push for equity and positive change is also a motivational factor.

What inspires you?
I am inspired every day by my students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. The look of pride and joy on a child’s face when they make a new discovery or master a skill is a constant reminder of why I love this work.

Why are you excited to be a part of the Teacher Advisory Group working to make Oakland a better place for educators?
All students in Oakland deserve a high quality education. I believe a big part of achieving this goal is attracting and retaining excellent teachers. The Teacher Advisory Group will be an opportunity for teachers from across the district to come together to discuss what is working, what challenges they are facing, and what can be done to improve conditions for teachers and students. When teachers come together and make their voices heard, positive change can happen. I am excited to be a part of this work.

Edward Everett Hale said, “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” I can’t change all that is broken and dysfunctional in Oakland schools, but I can TRY to be part of the movements for change in the experiences of our children.

I am grateful to be able to be part of a space with fellow educators to think about and advocate for a sustainable working environment for Oakland schools and its children. It is rare to have spaces like this, and I am excited to be part of it.

I am constantly inspired by the strength, determination, and resilience in my students and their families who fight against the current status quo so that they can receive the quality education that they deserve.

Why are you excited to be a part of the Teacher Advisory Group working to make Oakland a better place for educators?
I look forward to working with like minded, motivated, insightful colleagues who are also committed to supporting the Oakland community through quality teacher retention and recruitment strategies, as well as studying and advising the district to better utilize resources and finances. I look forward to boldly examine different citywide issues that are preventing Oakland public schools from serving their underprivileged neighborhoods fully, and problem solving with other TAG members to provide better neighborhood school choices for our children.
